Highlights of the Tennessee Handgun Laws

Tennessee’s Permitless Handgun Carry
  • Became effective on July 1st, 2021
  • Only applies to handguns, does not apply to shotguns or rifles
Requirements
  • The person must be 21 or older;
  • The person must be in lawful possession of the handgun; and
  • The person must be in a place where the handgun is lawfully allowed
Not Required but Highly Recommended
  • Gun safety and training classes
  • Carry permit
Handguns are prohibited in the following places
  • Judicial buildings
  • Federal buildings
  • Public schools and school buses
  • Public recreation buildings and civic centers
  • Places authorized to serve alcohol
Places that have “No Firearms Allowed”
  • Private business
  • Libraries
  • Buildings containing law enforcement agencies
  • Mental health, substance abuse, or intellectual and developmental disability facilities
  • Juvenile facilities
  • Department of human services
  • All other government buildings
Permits Required
  • Public parks
  • Greenways
  • Nature trails
Persons not allowed to carry a handgun
  • One who has been convicted of a felony drug offense or of a felony crime of violence, an attempt to commit a felony crime of violence, or a felony involving the use of a deadly weapon
  • One of has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence and is still subject to the disabilities of such conviction
  • One who is prohibited from possessing a firearm under any other state or federal law
  • One who is under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • One who has been convicted of stalking
  • One who has been convicted of a DUI in Tennessee and other states 2 or more times within the prior 10 years or once within the past 5 years
  • Has been adjudicated as a mental defective, judicially committed to or hospitalized in a mental institution pursuant to title 33, or had a court appoint a conservator for the person by reason of a mental defect
